Podiatry FAQs
What does a podiatrist treat?
A podiatrist (DPM) is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. At Dennis Grandy, DPM, we treat bunions, ingrown toenails, heel pain, ankle sprains, fractures, fungal infections, arthritis, neuromas, sports injuries, and more.
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Grandy?
Many patients can schedule directly without a referral. Some HMO plans do require one, so we recommend checking with your insurance carrier or calling our office at (916) 920-0371 before your appointment.
Is Dr. Grandy contracted with UC Davis Medical Group?
Yes. Dr. Grandy is contracted with the UC Davis Medical Group, and our office accepts a variety of HMOs, PPOs, and other health plans.
What insurance plans do you accept?
We accept most insurance plans, including many HMOs and PPOs. Because coverage varies, please call us to verify that your carrier is accepted. Patients are responsible for co-payments and any charges not covered by insurance.
Where is your office located?
Our office is located at 87 Scripps Dr, Suite 212, Sacramento, CA 95825. You can find directions and details on our Office page.
What are your office hours?
Our office is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. These are the hours you can reach our practice by phone. Please call for the doctor’s current appointment availability.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring your insurance card, a list of current medications with doses, your medical and surgical history, and any recent X-rays, test results, or records. You can also download and complete our patient forms ahead of time on the New Patients page.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you cannot keep your appointment or will be late, please call as soon as possible. Charges may apply for appointments cancelled less than 24 hours in advance.
When should I see a foot doctor?
You should see a podiatrist if you have foot or ankle pain that lasts more than a few days, swelling, numbness, a wound that is slow to heal, signs of infection, changes in nail color or thickness, or pain that keeps you from walking or exercising comfortably.
What causes heel pain?
The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the thick band of tissue along the bottom of the foot. Heel spurs, Achilles tendonitis, stress fractures, and flat feet can also cause heel pain.
Are custom orthotics better than store-bought insoles?
Custom orthotics are medical devices made from a mold of your feet to correct your specific alignment and pressure points. Store-bought insoles offer general cushioning but cannot address individual biomechanical problems the way custom orthotics can.
Why is foot care so important for people with diabetes?
Diabetes can reduce circulation and sensation in the feet, so small cuts or blisters may go unnoticed and turn into ulcers or infections. Regular exams and daily self-checks help prevent serious complications. Learn more about our diabetic foot care.
Can an ingrown toenail be treated in the office?
Yes. Most ingrown toenails can be treated during a quick in-office visit. Dr. Grandy can relieve pain, treat infection, and in recurring cases remove part of the nail to help prevent it from growing back into the skin.
Do you treat sports injuries?
Yes. Our sports medicine care helps athletes of all levels recover from ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and other foot and ankle injuries, and return to activity safely.
Can toenail fungus be cured?
Toenail fungus can be stubborn, but it is treatable. Depending on the severity, treatment may include topical or oral antifungal medications and professional nail care. Early treatment gives the best results. See our fungal toenails page for details.
Do you provide foot care for seniors?
Yes. Our geriatric foot care helps older adults manage arthritis, circulation problems, thickened nails, calluses, and balance concerns so they can stay active and independent.
Will I need foot surgery?
Most foot and ankle conditions improve with conservative treatment such as footwear changes, orthotics, medication, padding, or physical therapy. Surgery is generally considered only when non-surgical options do not provide relief.
